(Victorian Docklands, Liverpool)

Set against the lamplit docks of nineteenth-century Liverpool, Carry Yer Bags, Sir? captures a fleeting exchange between two very different lives: a dockside boy, hopeful and determined, offers his services to a passing gentleman whose world appears far removed from his own.

The painting draws quiet inspiration from the street life described by Silas K. Hocking in Her Benny; there, Liverpool’s children navigate hardship with resilience and resourcefulness. Like Benny, this young figure stands at the edge of opportunity, reaching toward something better.

Gaslight glows against damp cobbles; ships rest beyond them in the mist, symbols of industry, departure, and possibility. The moment is not sentimental but observational: a study of class, ambition, and quiet dignity beneath the weight of Victorian commerce.

This work forms part of David Bullock’s ongoing exploration of Victorian narrative life, where fleeting encounters reveal strength, resolve, and human connection.
