Gumdrop Boys - Original
Beneath the glow of a shop window and winter gaslight, two boys linger in quiet conspiracy. Their clothes are worn, their expressions intent; the sweets inside the glass gleam with a richness far beyond their reach.
Gumdrop Boys captures a moment suspended between mischief and longing. Whether they intend to steal, admire, or simply dream is left unresolved. The tension lies not in action, but in possibility.
Inspired by the textures and street life of nineteenth-century England, the painting continues David Bullock’s exploration of Victorian narrative scenes: small human dramas unfolding beneath lamplight and industry. Here, childhood resilience meets temptation, and the glow of the confectioner’s window becomes both beacon and barrier.
The work marks the beginning of a developing series centred on the lives of working-class children, their schemes, their loyalties, and the fragile worlds they inhabit after dark.
